Hailstorm casues major damage in SE Nebraska

The severe thunderstorm that swept through southeast Nebraska left a swath of significant damage to crops and property last week. Nebraska Extension has a number of resources on hail damage and a team that put this information together following hailstorms in 2014. After the storm last week, the most important thing for farmers to do was assess all their fields (drive, walk, and make a list) and understand the insurance policy they have and report damage to their crop insurance agent. It has been over a week since the storm so the chance for crop recovery can be better determined.

June is Alzheimer’s, Brain Awareness Month

Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month is observed in June and offers an opportunity to discuss Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. Throughout the month, the Alzheimer’s Association encourages people around the world to support the movement by wearing purple and learning how to fight the disease. This month of awareness promotes talking to those affected and encouraging more research to find a cure.

Trout in the Classroom now accepting applications

Trout in the Classroom, a Nebraska Game and Parks Commission educational opportunity for schools, is now accepting applications for the 2022-23 school year. The interdisciplinary, science-based program invites classrooms to explore aquatic ecosystems, life cycles, water quality and the scientific process through raising trout eggs in their classroom. Students learn about life science, watersheds, data collection and analysis over the course of the spring semester.
