Pioneer track competes at Crete

A relay team and a pair of individual athletes scored medals for the Nebraska City track teams at the Crete Invite on April 28. Daniel Adanza, Mason Houghton, Alex Rico and MJ Nelson had the highlight for the Pioneer boys’ team by taking third in the 4x800 relay with a time of 8:50.54.

William W. Witty Jr.

William W. Witty Jr., 79 of Syracuse, passed away on May 1, 2022, after a short battle with dementia. William was born on November 25, 1942, to William & Janice (Miesbach) Witty in Nebraska City. After high school he joined the Air Force Reserves until he was honorably discharged in 1967.

Bloody Mary state championships awarded at Eagles Club

The Eagles Club in Nebraska City played host to the eighth annual Nebraska Bloody Mary State Championships on Sunday, May 1. This year's winners were: Independent: Derek Bentz, Spencer. Bentz received a trophy and $100. Bar/Restaurant: Library Lounge at Lied Lodge, Rebecca Austin and Packy Colgan. The Library Lounge received a trophy and $100. Runner-up Peoples Choice: Nebraska City Eagles No. 968, Rick Freshman/Katie McGinnis. The Eagles Club received $100. People's Choice: Kitty's Roadhouse, Hastings, Owen Nelson. Kitty's Roadhouse received a trophy and $250. Overall Bloody Mary Champion: Farmer Browns, Brian Brown, Central City. Farmer Browns received a trophy and $400, and the restaurant will be the featured Bloody Mary mixologists at the Trail Boss Champagne Brunch during the Cattlemen's Ball of Nebraska on Saturday, June 4, in Weeping Water. The Shadow Ridge Band from Council Bluffs provided the music, and participants and tasters were all invited out on the dance floor as the band closed out its live set with Eric Clapton's "You Look Wonderful Tonight" after performing songs by Don Williams, Johnny Cash, and John Michael Montgomery.

Rain doesn’t dampen students’ Arbor Day enthusiasm

Arbor Day 2022 looked a little different for students in Nebraska City schools. The morning program, customarily held on the lawn of the mansion at Arbor Lodge State Historical Park, was instead held in the Northside Elementary commons. The afternoon program was able to go on as planned. Raptors from Fontenelle Forest in Omaha were the special guests at both programs, and students were able to take home a cypress seedling at the conclusion of the program.
