DHHS, Department of Education partner to improve mental health services in schools

For rural educators in Nebraska City, Lexington, and Valentine, mental health help for their students is on the way. The Nebraska Department of Education (NDE) and Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services - Division of Behavioral Health (DHHS-DBH) are collaborating with three Local Education Agencies (LEAs) of Lexington, Nebraska City, and Valentine to improve school-based mental health services.

According to Mental Health America, individuals' reactions to the death of a loved one can elicit unique emotions linked to their relationship to the deceased. For example, MHA, a community-based nonprofit focused on promoting mental health, notes that a child's death could inspire different feelings than the loss of an elderly spouse. When parents lose a child, that death may arouse a sense of injustice that can overwhelm the child's parents as they contemplate lost potential, unfulfilled dreams and, in certain instances, the child's suffering. Elderly individuals who lose a spouse may be overcome by feelings of loneliness. Recognition of these different reactions is important because it can help individuals and their support networks more effectively cope with their grief.

Melanoma signs & symptoms

NCMS Wrestling Trailblazer Conference Champions

The Nebraska City Middle School boys and girls wrestling team wrapped up their season with their final competition on March 10 in Nebraska City. The Pioneers competed in the Trailblazer Conference wrestling tournament on Saturday, March 5, and came away as team champions for the second consecutive year. Annual Native American Artifact Show held Saturday

A full house at the Missouri River Basin-Lewis and Clark Center received a brief history of the five tribes of Nebraska during the center’s annual Native American Artifact Show Saturday afternoon. Independent scholar Nancy Gillis discussed the Pawnee, the Omaha, the Ponca, the Santee, and the Winnebago during her hour-long presentation, which was a condensation of a semester-long course she has taught during her 35 years in Nebraska.
