Raymond “Tom” B. Royal, 95 of Syracuse, passed away on February 20, 2022, at the Syracuse Good Samaritan Center. He was born on March 2, 1926, to Herman & Elizabeth (Kempkes) Royal near Palmyra. On August 14, 1947, he married Marion Whitehead at St. Paulinus Catholic Church. Tom was a lifelong farmer in Otoe county, which brought him immense joy.

During 2021, Nebraska City Utilities workmen replaced 12 miles of rural lines in the western part of Otoe County in order to improve reliability of electrical delivery for customers. The new lines use upgraded technology that stands up to ice and winds better than the previous lines, said NCU General Manager Jeff Kohrs.
The staff of the Morton-James Public Library and Nebraska City Tourism and Commerce hosted a ribbon cutting for the new StoryWalk in Steinhart Park on Tuesday, Oct. 26, 2021. The first featured story was “I Need a Hug/Necesito un Abrazo” by Aaron Blabey, which was presented on 20 panels for children and their families to read aloud while walking along the path from the bridge to the Old Stone Cabin. MJPL Board member Sue Little brought the idea to the library board, and Assistant Director Luann Beard, holding the scissors, was instrumental in getting the panels ready to be installed. Library Director Donna Kruse also thanked Nebraska City Parks and Recreation Commissioner Patrick Wehling and the city’s Parks and Recreation staff for their invaluable assistance in installing the StoryWalk. In April of 2021, Syracuse City Council approved a contract with Van Kirk Bros to work hand in hand with Public Works for a Water Supply Improvement Project. The contract allowed the construction of s new well and transmission main for the City’s water supply along Highway 50.
Nebraska City Utilities and Nebraska City Tourism and Commerce Inc. hosted an afternoon ribbon cutting on Friday, Oct. 15, 2021, for the city’s new electric vehicle charging station in the Sunken Parking Lot in the 700 block of Central Avenue.
