Miller hopeful for Husker football dream

Blake Miller’s Husker football dream became just a little bit more real last week during a special event at Lourdes school last week where Miller confirmed his intent to attend college at UNL and play for the Big Red. Miller attended Husker football games as a kid and thought about how cool it would be to take the field at Memorial Stadium.

Pioneer Wrestling History

The Nebraska City girls’ and boys’ wrestling teams made history at Platteview on Jan. 28 by sweeping both divisions of the Trailblazer Conference tournament. The girls’ team competed in its first-ever sanctioned district tournament at home on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 4, and Feb. 5 with the top three competitors in each weight class gaining qualification to the first-ever NSAA Girls’ State Wrestling Championship tournament. See the Friday issue of the News-Press for coverage of the girls’ district event. The Pioneer boys’ team will follow suit by competing at its district tournament on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 11 and 12, also at home. The top four wrestlers in each weight class will qualify for the NSAA Boys’ State Wrestling Championship tournament. The girls’ and boys’ teams will compete at state on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Feb. 17, 18 and 19.

Knights at Conference

The Lourdes girls’ and boys’ basketball teams won their opening games of the Pioneer Conference tournament with the girls’ beating Tri County 46-19 and the boys’ beating Friend in double-overtime, 56-51. Leading scorers for the girls’ team were Aspen Meyer, 12; Sofia Fulton, 11; Elizabeth Heng, four; Jenna Box, four; Evie Madison, four; Sarah Gigi, three; Ruby Bruggeman, two; Citlali Rodriguez, two; Lauren Benedict, two; and Lucy Bruggeman, two. The Lourdes boys’ team won the second overtime 8-3 against Friend to take the win. Blake Miller scored 31 followed by Zach Tesarek, 10; Beau Lee, eight; Will Funke, five; and Joe Kearney, two.

Blake Miller and Caleb Howard signed letter of intent

Lourdes seniors Blake Miller and Caleb Howard recently signed letters of intent declaring the institution where they would continue their football and academic careers. Miller will be attending the University of Nebraska at Lincoln while Howard will be attending Midland University. The athletes were joined by members of their families for a special signing event.
