Nebraska CIty HIgh School girls’ wrestling coach Ron Schaulis provided the following year-in-review for his team following the conclusion of the program’s first season as a sanctioned sport by the Nebraska School Activities Association.
The 1949 Otoe County Boys’ Basketball and Girls’ Volleyball Tournaments were hosted at Syracuse School Auditorium from Tuesday through Friday, Feb. 1-4.
Eleven students from Lourdes Central Catholic competed in the Nebraska Academic Decathlon State Competition held at Bellevue University on Feb. 18 and 19 and brought home major hardware, placing firstin the Very Small Schools category, designated as schools with enrollment of up to 126 in grades 9-12. The Lourdes team also placed third in the Small Schools category, which expands to include schools with an enrollment under 650.

The Palmyra volleyball team recorded posted records of 16-3 in 1950-51, 21-2 in 1951-52, and 21-1 in 1952-53. Players on the 1951-52 team included Mildred Hartman, Francie Stilwell, Marguerite Guy, Donna Smith, Marie Weatherhogg, Gera Powers, Elberta Rhoten, Marie Cooper, Wilma Dowding, Vera Thomson, Marilyn Kelly and Betty Cooper. The team was led by Coach Davis.

Joe Kearney drilled a three-point shot at the end of the third quarter and the Lourdes boys’ basketball team took control on the way to a 55-33 win over Thayer Central in subdistrict basketball action at Johnson-Brock High School on Tuesday, Feb. 22.
March 6, 1952 -- The Palmyra Panthers won a trip to the state basketball tournament in Lincoln March 12-15 by tripping the Talmage Bulldogs, 44-42, in the Class D regional playoff on the Peru floor. Coach Bernard Davis’ lads won 23 and lost thee during the season in winning the MUDECAS Class A title and coming behind Syracuse in the Otoe county tournament.
