Newcomers took top prizes Friday at the Arbor Day chili cook-off.

Chili connoisseurs crowned Nebraska City Emergency Medical Services with the people's choice award and the best booth prize.

The Bernard Real Estate team of Deana and David Guhde was selected to hold the traveling trophy for best of show.

The newcomers toppled two-time best of show champions Nebraska City firefighters and two-time people's choice champions Andrew and Lindsay Krog.

Gregg Goebel, co-captain of the EMS team, said the friendly rivalry with the undefeated firefighters' chili team made it fun.

“It looked like the community enjoyed it and that is what we were after,” he said.
Cathy Blankenship, who serves on both the fire and rescue divisions, said EMS had the advantage of Goebel, a former chef, and co-captain Wendy Wielechowski.
“Gregg used to be a chef and Wendy is a certified food scientist or something like that,” she said. “I think it gives EMS a slight edge.”

Goebel said the “family friendly” recipe has been perfected over the years and Wielechowski said scientific precision was used.

Their booth included included a gurney for a table, bed pans  and a hot sauce IV.
Phil Hancock, captain of the firefighters team, said his team welcomes the newcomers.

“I'm glad to have everyone out to compete. It's getting better every year,” he said.
Deana and David Guhde say they will proudly display the traveling trophy at the Bernard Real Estate offices.

David Guhde, a certified barbecue judge by the Kansas City Barbecue Society, said their recipe has been entered in other contests, but this is their first best of show.
Their booth featured a home model and the slogan “all you need is a home and a bowl of chili.”

Their chili features steak, ground pork and fresh mushrooms.
Deana Guhde said it is designed for flavor.

“Anybody can make their chili hot, but to make it good takes some skill,” she said.
Other team competing were KNCY Radio, Tom Ramage, Big Dog Grappling Action, Jordan Dierking and Riverview Terrace.
