The Nebraska City Planning Commission gave its recommendation Wednesday for zoning changes to compliment a proposed city ordinance that would ban parking vehicles on grass in residential areas.
The zoning would limit how much of a yard can be used for parking and says parking surfaces shall not be dirt, grass or weeds.
Parking or driving surfaces on the city road right-of-way shall be constructed of a material matching the street surface. New houses built after October of this y ear will have paved or brick driveways.
The zoning ordinance stipulates the depth of excavation to build a driveway, the thickness of a rock base and depth of materials such as asphalt or concrete.
Anyone seeking to build a parking or driveway must obtain a curb cut permit from the city.
All driveway entries form the paved street shall have the curb ground or removed and a drive surface installed to the front of the property line.
Residences may not have a parking or driveway area more than 50 percent of the front yard.
Houses where the hard-surfaced parking area is already more than 50 percent of the front yard or 60 percent of the combined side and rear yard may remain, but the zoning will not allow construction of additional parking areas.
