Syracuse-Dunbar-Avoca won a number of close matches to emerge as 51-8 winners in a clash of Otoe County dual teams Tuesday at the Rockets’ gym.
The S-D-A wrestling team won three decisions by two points or less. In addition, the Rockets won two other matches four-point decisions. One of the close calls came in the final match of the night as the Rockets’ Matt Clark won over Nebraska City’s Trenton Kasbohm by scoring points right before the buzzer to claim a 7-5 win.
S-D-A will return to action for the Capitol Conference Tournament Saturday at Arlington. Nebraska City will return to action for the David City Invite on Friday.
Below are post-dual remarks from Coach Tyler Hodges of Nebraska City and Coach Chad Fuller of S-D-A.
Coach Tyler Hodges
The score was the score. We got beat, but you’ve got to look beyond that. There were five matches we lost by close decisions. Until we turn that corner and start winning the big matches and not giving up bonus points we are not going to compete with the top ranked teams in the state. That’s just the way it is and that is who we compete against. We’ve wrestled four of the top five teams in the state here recently. The schedule is starting to come into the way that we want it set up as a coaching staff because we want to wrestle the best. We are not going to go around just hammering on mediocre smaller schools or teams that aren’t at our ability. You are not going to get to be the best unless you wrestle the best. And that’s kind of our philosophy, anytime, anyone, anywhere. My kids really take that approach into tournaments and don’t pay much attention to the rankings. They are ranked No. 1 as a dual team and No. 4 as a team. My hat is off to them. They wrestled really well and they beat us, but to get to that level where we need to be, we’ve got to start winning those matches. We’ve got to see those guys and that is why we wrestle that level of competition week in and week out. The beauty of this is that, when Coach Fuller and myself, when I came to Nebraska City, we got this set up and we both wanted it to be kind of a rivalry thing. It’s getting there. We had a packed gym at our house last year. They had a packed gym here tonight. We’ll see it again next year and we’re going to keep it going. We’ve got to refocus. We’ve got a lot of tournaments between now and districts and we’ve got a lot of work to do to win those matches we lost by decisions.

We knew coming in that there would be several matches that would be very close. Coach Hodges does a great job with those kids. They give us their best every time we wrestle. I was proud of our kids for the most part. We went out and competed. And you just look at that last match. The match is never over. And to see Matt be able to finish the dual with some of excitement is a lot fun. I am lucky because I have good kids. I am lucky that I have good assistant coaches. We have a great mat club. And everybody has just bought into what we’re doing. When you have that, you have success. It’s fun. We hope it continues. Like anything else it cycles. We are on top of that cycle and we just hope to stay there.
