The two-time defending champions in the Nebraska City Chili Cook-off are shrugging off the latest challenge to their supremacy.

The Nebraska City Fire Department has won best of show in the contest's first two years, but Nebraska City EMS is promising to enter a contender this year.

Rose Ralstin of Nebraska City Tourism and Commerce also expects legendary Nebraska City chili-meister Tom Rammage to return to action.

"He's kind of gone down as having the best chili back in the day, so he's bringing that back," Ralstin said.
Chili entries are judged for best of show and best booth. People can also purchase a ticket for $1 for the people's choice award.

"The people's choice is where the real battle is at because everyone will have an opportunity to choose their favorite and whoever wins the people's choice will receive 60 percent of the proceeds as a fundraiser," Ralstin said.

This year, there will also be a traveling trophy available.

Scheduled to perform at the cook-off is the 75-member Nebraska City Youth Choir.

Bottomless bowls of chili are sold for $6, but there is a $1 discount for people who bring their own re-usable bowl.
