The U.S. Geological Survey is reporting an earthquake in southeast Nebraska  at 8:54 p.m. on Dec. 16.

James Cook said he had never experience an earthquake before and thought perhaps there had been an explosion or a plane crash when his house began to shake.

The 3.5 magnitude quake shook dishes in cupboards for four or five seconds and then all was quiet on Cook’s farm south of Nebraska City.

The U.S. Geological Survey is reporting that the quake was 3.1 miles deep. Its epicenter was 2 miles north northwest of Auburn.

Goebel said the danger from aftershocks should be minimal because the quake was relatively shallow and the fault line is not known for sustained activity.
