Organizers say over 70 families participated in a April 16 household hazards waste collection at the Otoe County roads shop near Nebraska City.
County Commissioner and event organizer Carol Crook said the response by local citizens was outstanding.
“We were busy, busy, busy the whole time we were there,” she told county commissioners Tuesday.
The collection included 3,460 pounds of paint, 1,760 pounds of pesticides, and 360 pounds of miscellaneous chemicals.
Ten volunteers joined the Red Willow County hazardous waste team to sort and pack the waste for shipment to Kimball, Neb., where the waste will be incinerated.
The collection was made possible through a grant to the Nemaha Natural Resources District from the Department of Environmental Quality Waste reduction and Recycling Program.
Five Rivers Resource Conservation and Development assisted the NRD with planning and collection.
