The Peru State College Bobcat volleyball team moved their overall record to 11-6 by winning two of the matches while playing on the road over the weekend.
On Thursday, the Bobcats travelled to Omaha to play a non-conference match against the Grace
University Royals and won 25-23, 25-21, and 25-14.
On Friday, the Bobcats went on their longest conference travel trip and defeated Oklahoma Wesleyan University, 25-18, 25-16, and 25-20.
On Saturday, Peru State faced the College of the Ozarks, who the night before had knocked off perennial MCAC leader, Bellevue University.
While putting up a good fight, the Bobcats went down 25-17, 25-23, 25-13.
After the weekend, Peru State is third in the MCAC with a 5-2 record trailing Ozarks, now 7-0, and
Bellevue, 7-1.
The Bobcats will have an opportunity to play both of these teams again at home later in the schedule.
In the match against the Royals, Peru State was led by Sarah Novak of Howells with ten kills of 17
attempts and two errors and hit a very good .471 percentage. Novak also had a solo block. Toni Ratliff of Shenandoah and Dani Vernon of Fairbury each added seven kills.
KT Salberg of Sterling put up 26 assists and added two service aces and led the team with ten digs. Emily Maresh of Central City and Cece Walters of Nebraska City each had nine digs while they had three and one service aces respectively. Tara Carstens of Lincoln led the team with three solo blocks.
On Friday, the ‘Cats hit well as a team against Oklahoma Wesleyan as they had 42 kills
on 94 swings with 11 errors for a .330 hitting percentage. Ratliff had 12 kills and led the team by hitting .611. She also added two solo blocks and two set assists. Vernon had eight kills while Novak and Jordan Rettele (Lincoln) each contributed seven kills.
Salberg continued leading the team with her setting by putting up 32 assists. She also added two service aces and eight digs. Maresh had a team high 21 digs and one ace serve. Walters was a force at the serving line notching five service aces against Oklahoma Wesleyan. Vernon and Ratliff had two solo blocks apiece while Carstens, Novak, and Salberg each had one.
Facing the league leading Bobcats of the College of the Ozarks on Saturday saw PSC only hit .079 as a team as they were forced into 20 hitting errors out of their 127 attempts. Meanwhile, College of the Ozarks hit a respectable .330. Ratliff and Novak led the Peru State Bobcat hitters with 11 and ten kills respectively while no other ‘Cat was able to add more than three kills.
Against College of the Ozarks, Salberg had 27 assists and seven digs. Maresh continued her excellent defensive contribution to the Bobcats as she had 29 digs while also having 26 good service receptions. Walters had the only two service aces for Peru State while Vernon had the only solo block.
Peru State takes to the road for two matches as they will travel to York College on Wednesday for a
MCAC match. On Friday, they will be in Des Moines to play Grandview College. The Bobcats’ next home action will be Tuesday, Oct. 12, as they host the Bellevue College Bruins in an important MCAC matchup. Game time will be 7 p.m. in the Al Wheeler Activity Center.
