The Nebraska City softball team earned a fifth place finish during the Syracuse tournament on Saturday, August, 25.

Sydney Schmitz threw a five hit shut out in six innings of work in the Pioneer win.


In the bottom of the fifth inning and the game scoreless, the Pioneers broke the game open.  Taylor Moyer  hit a one out single and MacKenzie Anthens followed up with a double to centerfield.  After Patricia Trice hit into a fielder’s choice, the bases were loaded for Elizabeth Hodges who smacked a two RBI double to break up the tie.  Abby Balfour drilled a hard double to score Trice and NC lead 3 to 0.  Still in the third, Taylor Nicolay earned an RBI by scoring Selena Balquier.  Pitcher, Sydney Schmitz, helped herself out at the plate by hitting a two out RBI single to left field and the Pioneers lead 5 to 0 at the end of the fifth.


In the sixth the Pioneers scored three more runs after singles from Reese Madsen and Athens.  Balfour hit another double and the Pioneers went on to win 8 to 0.

The Pioneers pounded out 12 hits including a MacKenzie Anthens HR.


With the game tied at 5-5 heading into the bottom half of the fourth inning, NC scored three runs.  Moyer hit a single to get the rally started.  Anthens reached on an error and Hodges nailed a line drive single that scored Moyer.  Balfour hit a single to left field that scored Anthens and Hodges.


Schmitz and Balfour combined for the pitching totals.  Balfour threw two innings and allowed three hits and three earned runs.  Schmitz tossed four innings and surrendered four hits and no runs.

Leading 6-5 heading into the bottom of the sixth, Auburn hit a two run HR to defeat the Pioneers.

Nebraska City are now 5-4 on the season.
