With five teams in the Class B1 Juniors Area Tournament at Falls City, Nebraska City needed just three games to win the championship. And they got the three wins—in style.
Beatrice scored a run against the NC Juniors in the opening game on Saturday, and that’s the only run the opposition would record.
Nebraska City easily topped Beatrice, 10-1. An 11-0 victory set over Auburn on Sunday put Nebraska City in the championship round.
Auburn got past Beatrice to win the loser’s bracket and, with Nebraska City hosting the Class B state tournament this season, that was good enough to get the Bulldogs to state. If they had designs for winning the area tournament, however, it would require back-to-back championship round wins Tuesday night.
Nebraska City stopped Auburn before it ever got started in that pursuit by winning in shut out fashion, 7-0.
The two tourney match ups with Auburn were mirror images.
Nine hits produced 11 runs in the first tourney meeting. Bryce Levy had two hits, including a double and Dylan Knoell and Trent Fahey each had two singles. Garrett Bassinger, Tyler Levy and Eli Southard all had singles.
Auburn had two hits for the game as the Nebraska City pitcher, Fahey, pitched six strikeouts against just one walk.
Bassinger posted a homer and a double as Nebraska City out-hit Auburn 7-2 in the championship round rematch. Fahey also had two hits including a double. Tyler Levy, Bryce Levy and Max Chaney all had singles.
Bassinger and Quintin Holman shared the pitching duties, just as they had done in the tourney opener against Beatrice.
Bassinger worked four frames and struck out five. Holman pitched three innings, struck out three and allowed two hits.
After dominating the field of teams at the area tournament, Nebraska City enters the state event at home on a seven-game winning streak and sporting a season record of 27-2.
First round match ups for the state event on Saturday are as follows: Bennington versus Auburn, 11 a.m.; Aurora versus Springfield, 2 p.m.; Wayne versus Waverly, 5 p.m.; and Nebraska City versus Alliance at 8 p.m.
Sunday’s action has the losers of the first two games of the tournament playing in an elimination game at 11 a.m. and the losers of the third and fourth games playing in a 2 p.m. elimination game. A winner’s bracket game involving the winners of the first two Saturday games will be 5 p.m. Sunday and the winner’s bracket game involving the winners of the third and fourth games from Saturday will be 8 p.m. Sunday.
