Complete game pitching performances and clutch final game hitting keyed the Nebraska City Seniors to their first Southeast Nebraska Baseball Conference tournament championship in a 7-2 decision against Springfield (Platteview) on Sunday night at the Syracuse ball field.
Coach Brendon Maddox said the pitching situation was ideal as Nebraska City needed just one hurler to win two divisional round games.
“That sets you up pretty good for the championship,” said Maddox.
Although Platteview scored early, Nebraska City responded and starting pitcher Sheridan Silvius took command on the way to victory.
Coach Maddox said Nebraska City hadn’t been hitting the ball all that well coming into the game, but was able to get clutch hits when they were needed.
Although this win for the Seniors counts just one time in the win column, Coach Maddox said he expects that the effects of the triumph will last.
“If we keep playing like this, it’s going to be tough to stop us come district time,” he said.
Turning to the final round game action, Nebraska City was held off the scoreboard in the first and second frames before putting up five runs in the third inning.
A one-out error put Trey Denniston on base and the Nebraska City team got a single from Andrew Harrah before Jake Kreifel hit his second single of the night, which plated two runs. And Garrett Bassinger followed with a 2-RBI double.  Bassinger would later score on an error.
In the fifth inning, Noah Kasbohm reached on a single, stole a base and scored on a past ball. Bassinger, who reached on a single, came home on an RBI walk to Denniston.
Silvius worked efficiently throughout most of the contest, struck out three and got the win.
