        • Becerra-Madsen traveling to compete at nationals Jun. 11, 2013
          Nebraska City Olympic and Paralympic medal winning wheelchair racer Cheri Becerra-Madsen will leave Nebraska City on Wednesday to compete at the 2013 U.S. Paralympics Track & Field National Championships June 14-16, in San Antonio.
          Cheri Becerra-Madsen, the first Native American woman to compete in an Olympic event, has taken time in her training to help a Marcus Yuekn, 19, of Lincoln. Yuen went to a benefit concert in Lincoln May 11 to meet Madsen, but when the event was canceled he reached her on Facebook. He had competed in basketball and street wheelchair races, but had not used the specialized wheelchair used in track competition. Yuen said he was thrilled when Madsen agreed to give him pointers and he joined her for some training sessions. “I was interested in learning the track and she worked it into me,” he said.

          Peru State Bobcat baseball senior Derek Voigt (Auburn, Wash.) was picked for the 2013 Rawlings-NAIA Baseball Gold Glove Team, as selected by the NAIA-Baseball Coaches Association (NAIA-BCA) All-America Selection Committee. For the seventh year, a total of nine players were chosen based upon their defensive success.

          Attorney General Jon Bruning today announced John Oldson, 47, was sentenced life-to-life in prison for the 1989 death of Cathy Beard. He was convicted of second degree murder on February 8, 2013. The sentence requires Oldson to serve no less than life imprisonment.
