When you're searching for colleges, there are plenty of things to consider, from curriculum offerings that will prepare you for a career in your field of choice to deciding whether a traditional brick-and-mortar school or an online college works better for your style of learning. As you continue your search, one item you want to make sure you remember is if the college of your choice is an accredited institution. While not all accredited online colleges and traditional universities are created equal, accreditation does mean that a school must adhere to standards of an independent accrediting organization. It's the role of the accrediting agency to review the school's staff and curriculum and make sure the school is performing at an acceptable level when it comes to educating students and preparing them for a career. Once you discover the school's accreditation, you can check with the U.S. Department of Education to ensure the accrediting agency is a nationally recognized organization. Accrediting institutions also usually compile complaints about member colleges, and work with colleges to fix problems when necessary. This helps ensure that colleges are upholding the standards of the accrediting agency, in addition to the organization's routine reviews of member colleges. A school's accreditation can also play a role in your ability to get financial aid in the form of loans and grants. In order to receive federal financial aid, the school must be accredited by an accrediting body that is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. It's also possible that you may not be able to receive aid from the state if the college doesn't have proper accreditation. A college's lack of accreditation can also affect your ability to get a job after college. Prospective employers will look at your educational history and may not hold schools that lack accreditation in the same regard as those that have been accredited. Accreditation is especially important if you work in a trade that requires licensure with the state or another governing board - as is often the case for technical careers such as nursing or architecture. In these cases, it's essential to make sure the college has the necessary accreditation before you enroll. Looking into the accreditation of prospective online colleges is a good place to start as you begin your search. Once that question has been answered, you can begin to answer other important questions as you determine which college is best for you.
