She has a heart of gold. (Editor's note: Julie Naberhaus and Jeffrey Crunk will be on the general election ballot for Nebraska City Parks Commissioner in November. The primary did not elminate her from the race; it narrowed the field of three down to two.) "

Keep those web hits coming in,ladies and gentlemen. (Editor's note: Dan Swanson assures me he is not Edna, but has proposed a theory that EDNA is an acronym for some group. " I am sorry to see Norman's go out of business. Yes, their prices were too high. But think of all the employees who will be out of jobs. These people have families to support. It makes me wonder what business will be next. Have you noticed that WalMart's prices are slowly creeping up? Everyone does not want to drive to Omaha or Lincoln to buy groceries. I don't see how that saves money with gas prices so high. Anyway, good luck to all former Norman's employees! "

" Where is the downtown improvement group? First, the Embers lock their doors and now IGA. How many paychecks does this affect? It's tough to lose your job and yes, it happens all the time to factory workers. We lost Pendleton. Although these are not exactly downtown business's, they are a part of the city and their employee's lived here and spent their money here. I hope we don't end up saying, as one writer said, " will the last one out of Nebraska City, turn off the lights? "

My opinion wrote on May 12, 2008 10:18 PM:

" Now that Norman's is closing can we not have the "It is all Walmart's fault" finger pointing?? It is not all Walmart's fault! I did not shop at IGA/Norman's before Wallmart nor did I after. Their prices have always been too high!!! I feel bad for the owners and the employees but what do they expect when there are other stores selling for less?? "

Mike wrote on May 12, 2008 9:02 PM:

" This is a message to Food Pride. I enjoy going in your store and now with IGA closing down I think that you guys should really step up the produce section. I think this would really draw people in and they would stick around and shop for more. "

I know some things are cheaper, but they really get you on other things. It's too late for Norman's, but let's try to support other stores before we lose them also. "

lights wrote on May 12, 2008 1:39 PM:

" Good Grief! What do we say, Edna? The last one out of town, turn off the lights?? I think a lot of people are trying very hard for THAT NOT to happen. Not only do the downtown lights light the streets for driving, they light the walks and storefronts. This prevents crime. Bad things happen in DARK alleys for a reason. And the reality of city living is that the stars shine brighter in the country. Maybe they will shut off all the factories and freeways in LA because they can't see the stars in the smog. "

Question for all taxpayers wrote on May 12, 2008 7:48 AM:

" What does it take to recall a Commissioner? What does it take for you as fellow taxpayers to want to recall them? Personally I am tired of being treated like I don't matter as a taxpayer by the commissioners and I want them recalled! If they can't do their jobs properly they do not belong in office!! "

Country Marter wrote on May 11, 2008 9:30 PM:

" IGA was a mistake for this town. Country Mart was a good store, they had it all. Meat, Produce, Deli, Bakery, ect was super. They competed with pricing and had alot more selections of grocerys such as Best Choice canned things. The ads was good also. First thing IGA did was raise prices. I personally had to shop somewhere else because it was cheaper to drive out of town when you could buy things 50 cents to $1.00 cheaper per item.
IGA did away with the Country Mart card that always had an added bonus's and kept me coming back every week. That kept me loyal to Country Mart week after week.
The reason IGA is closing is they turned thier backs on loyal customers and the customers went away.
Bring back Country Mart the customers will return. "

Local Parent wrote on May 11, 2008 5:48 PM:

" Edna,
I don't think the issue with not having street lights is whether or not cars can see. There aren't streetlights on highways or country roads and cars see just fine. Streetlights are for the safety of property, pedestrians, homeowners, and business owners. There may be increased theft and various crimes. I personally would not like to get home from working a late shift and have to park on a dark street and walk up to my home in darkness. When my streetlight burns out I call immediately to have it repaired. Unfortunately, people cannot be trusted as they once were, and I am very thankful to have streetlights provided by the city and utilities for my safety and peace of mind! "

Dennis the Menace wrote on May 10, 2008 10:12 PM:

" Edna, RE: Street Lights. Do you suppose that maybe there's a certain crime deterent to having the street lights on? If your car broke down after midnight, would you feel comfortable walking in pitch dark? What price do we put on safety? Want dark skies...move to the country...

You get your butt out there and crawl in a grader or a one of those pieces of equipment and go for 8 hour and have people like you to deal with. They are taxpayers too. At least they do not live in Lancaster County and drive a county vehicle to the county line and then hop in his own and drive the rest of the way home and waste our taxpayer dollars on gas. Waste like you "

The Light At 11th Street And Central Ave Has Been Out For Awhile Now. . . Drive Through There At Night And You Will See Why Lights Are Important. .People Cross That Intersection All Night Long. I Dont Care How Bright Your "Modern Cars" Headlights Are. You Turn The Corner And Hurt Or Kill Someone?? Then What? You Sue The City For No Lights?? Come On Dear! You Think About It?? Oh Yea! GET OVER IT!. . . .Oh And To The Rest You. . .You Can Finally End The Normans And Walmart Debate. .They Close Most Likely Next Week. .Who's Next?? WHAT SAY YOU wrote on May 9, 2008 3:40 PM:

" WALMART WINS! Didn't we all know that this would happen? Especially when IGA refused to lower their prices and be competitive. They had the best meat and produce in town and now what choice will we have?, Food Pride? It's a great neighborhood store but very little selection and higher prices. I for one, will shop in Walmart in Omaha since the prices are consistently lower there than in NC. However, the meat stinks just like any other Walmart. No Frills is a good choice for meat. Hey Kriefels Family/City Wholesale Meat! Here is your chance to step up to the plate and offer your high quality meats at a storefront location either downtown or on south 11th. You could take over the meat market with more visibility and higher quality. That niche will never be a Walmart target and there are plenty of people that would welcome the quality. "

" I wanted to thank the city for filling in potholes in my alley. We are lucky to live in a town where street work gets done in a timely fashion. Keep up the good work. Also to Mike Knapp -- you and your commitment to NC baseball are what make small-town America great. Way to go! Finally, I have not been a fan of shopping at Norman's because I thought the prices were too high. Then a big chain store came to town, and I realize what a blessing Norman's is. They have FRESH produce. And their prices on it are REASONABLE, sometimes cheaper! Please, if you are disgusted by the produce elsewhere in town, shop for it at Norman's. I do, and it is worth it. Bigger isn't always better, as I have learned the hard way. Please support locally-owned businesses like Norman's before they are forced to close, and we have to drive to Omaha or Lincoln for clean, fresh fruits and vegetables. Also, don't forget to shop for fresh, clean LOCAL produce at N.C.'s farmer's market. Let's demand fresh food!!! "

Edna wrote on May 7, 2008 10:45 PM:

" How much does the city spend to power the street lights? Just think of all the money and energy that would be saved if the lights were turned off at midnight. Modern cars have powerful headlights so safety wouldn't be an issue, plus just think how pretty the stars would be. When I was a youth the stars were so easy to see at night, but now they just don't shine like they used to. "

In this day and age it's refreshing to have people still honest enough and caring enough to help someone out. My country life years strong wrote on May 5, 2008 2:14 PM:

" I would like to comment on the disgraceful way that some of the people of this county are treating our poor county workers. I live in Otoe County and I live on a county maintained road. I grew up in Nebraska City and I have raised all of my children there and am now watching my grandchildren be raised here.
I knew when I built my house in the country that I wouldn't be living on a perfect road. I knew that there would be mud, pot holes, loose gravel, dust, etc. but that comes with the territory. I watch my road get graded with exceptional care. The man that grades my raod has many other roads to take care of, and while mine is not always in great shape this time of year; neither are any others. You can't do much with the roads when you get rain every few days and it takes a few days just for them to dry enough to take care ofthem. But I know that it comes with the season. I hope that people realize this when complaining that their roads aren't being maintained. Thank you Otoe county road crew! Great Job! "

Disappointed wrote on May 4, 2008 9:58 PM:

" I was at the last county commissioner's meeting and I was very disturbed by the whole meeting. One of the commissioner's looked out the window about the whole time I was in there. I wanted to stand up and say ask him to pay attention. A county employee stood up and apologized to the superintendent and county commissioners and they completely ignored him. How disturbing. Please tell me this is not how our county road employees are being treated by their supervisors. In order for the commissioners and superintendent to demand respect, don't they have to give respect? "

Roxy wrote on May 4, 2008 9:43 PM:

" I'm writing to the people of Otoe County to let them know what our great county commissioners have done now. It's been brought to my attention that whats right for one isn't right for another. our count road superintendent has taken disiplinary actions against 2 of our county road crew and the commissioners are backing him. Somewhere along the command line the foreman was left out. Yet the highway superintendent walked away scott free for his involvement in all this. These two employees have put in 45 plus years between them for the county with nothing on their records and now they are not doing their jobs. Our county commissioners need to wake up see what this guy is really doing (other than living in Lancaster county). These two guys were born and raised in Otoe County. They work and pay taxes in Otoe County and now Mr. Lancaster County doesn't like their work. I've lived in Otoe County for 45 years and I'm not sure I'm very proud of our governing body right now. How many signatures does it take for a recall. "

WHAT SAY YOU wrote on May 4, 2008 8:05 AM:

" Told you so! Our brilliant school board is showing their lack of sound fiscal management once again. Recently they are NOW considering geothermal energy as part of their 25 million white elephant at Northside school. Why would you consider a 20-30 year payback for a HVAC system??? They will be tearing the thing down before that is ever paid off! In the real world if you don't see a five year payback it isn't worth the investment. And on top of that they are spending $15,000 to "study" the idea. Are you kidding me??? I hope that you folks who voted for this bond issue have learned your lesson. "

Fed Up With Two Faced People wrote on May 3, 2008 7:41 AM:

" I just read the article in Friday May 2 New Press about Catron Camp and Retreat Center. My only question is: Why does only one person get all the credit for the work and commitment on saving the trees? Over the years their have been Girl Scout Troops, Summer Counselors, Community Service Workers, and Camp Rangers that have put in a lot more hours working outside than just one person in general. I am so fed up with people that take credit for projects that involve more than just the person that fills out the paper work. It seems to me that this person wants all the glory.

" Obviously my point is being missed. When I commented on a paid city employee I was referring to the ones at the top, not the min. wage kid paid to mow the grass. Common sense 101 has taught me that the employee will only do as much as the employer tells them to. I believe if there is laziness involved its with the "higher-ups" that refuse to admit there is a problem, or in citizens that would rather place the responsibilty on baseball players and parents to prepare the fields to play on. Rather than hide behind a screen name and be part of the problem, I let my name known so if anyone had a suggestion, maybe i could help with a solution. After speaking with a park employee (not my mother-in-law)I'm finding out that they agree that after 30 yrs these fields need improvements. In the meantime we are scheduled to play this weekend so if you are not busy Sunday afternnon come out and watch the boys play. They do play hard. "

" To "Woot",
You say you are in HS, this is good because you are learning a valuable lesson from observing rant and rave comments. Life is always a series of choices that you control, how you react to things, the attitude you select, where you live, how successful you are. Use this platform as a learning opportunity of how not to become and do not allow yourself to become a sour victim in life. Becoming an adult doesn't make people smart. As you get older you will find out some people just get older, never wiser. "

Continually Amazed wrote on May 1, 2008 1:16 AM:

" My how things have changed! I read that some are disappointed in some ballgames getting rained out. "It's not my job to volunteer to take care of the ballfield's." In a town with over 200 acres of parks where does one spend their time? This isn't Rosenblatt or Haymarket Park with a staff of 8-10 people JUST taking care of the ballfield. (They don't have that many taking care of all of the parks). Back to the changes...I coached baseball here too for over 10 years, during that time we had one rainout (because it started raining during the game). Our players (Junior's program and Legion) knew that if it rained that IF they wanted to play that night they had to come help get the field ready (volunteering). The Parks staff was always receptive to the "extra" help and worked with us to try to salvage our games. This was all before the field conditioners that they have now, just good old sand, sun and wind with a lot of hand raking. Rather than critique someone for being "lazy", chip in and "volunteer" to help them get things done, you'll probably get to play more games! "

IF IT IS OK WITH THE CITY, AND I WILL ASK, I WILL LOAD UP OUR KID'S 4 WHEELER AND DRAG THE FIELDS MYSELF. I KNOW THIS TAKES ALL OF ABOUT TEN MINUTES AND WOULD BE MORE THAN WORTH IT IF MEANT PLAYING MORE BASEBALL. AS FAR AS THE DIRT AND WATER COMMENT, AFTER 30 YEARS OF THE FIELDS GETTING NO ATTENTION ISNT IT TIME THAT WE DO SOMETHING. WHILE WE SET AT HOME NOT PLAYING BASEBALL BECAUSE IT RAINED 2 DAYS AGO WE COULD HAVE SET OUT AT THE POND STARING AT THE BEAUTIFUL UMPTEEN THOUSAND DOLLAR WALL WE HAD TO PLACE AROUND IT, OR WE COULD HAVE ENJOYED A WALK OR RIDE ON THE UMPTEEN THOUSAND DOLLAR BIKE TRAIL, OR BOUGHT OURSELVES A HOTDOG AT THE UMPTEEN THOUSAND DOLLAR CONCESSION STAND. " To Country Living: It's called RAIN ! That's why the roads are in such bad shape, not to mention all the ice that we had over the winter, but being the "Rocket Scientist" that you are you already knew that and just needed something to complain about. Maybe what you don't know is how much territory (MILES) these guys have to maintain. What's the square mileage of Otoe County? Lets see know, divide that by 12 motorgraders and 4 rock trucks, you'll have a rough estimate of what these guys do. Cut em slack or maybe you'd like to try your hand behing the wheel of a motorgrader. I'm guessing you couldn't operate a motorgrader to save your skin, like most "EXPERTS" that have a problem with their road. I'm also gonna go out on a limb here and say your probably a "City Slicker" gone country. Oh well, whatever the case, move back to the city if you have a problem with the roads. Myself, personally, I pleased with my road, of course, I've enjoyed "Country Living" my entire life!!! GET A CLUE!!!! "

" It really bothers me that people don't support the people who work for the county and city. I understand it gets frustrating, but people need to realize those employees have supervisors that tell them what to do and when to do it. Whether it's the parks dept., city, or county, they do as their told. If anyones not doing their jobs, it's the people in charge. I think we need changes in both county and city offices. Why are our taxes so high? Where does that money go? Come on, a main street manager. Get real. Take that one wasted wage and put it towards the ball fields and problem solved. We didn't need a glorified gardener before and we don't need one now. The county has problems too. The only commissioner with any commonsense, the one we need in there, has bigger problems to take care of.(God Bless her). Mike Knapp has a valid gripe. He does alot for our kids. We need change. Getting the retired, narrow minded commissioners out of the county offices, would be a great START!!!! "
