Robert Eugene "Gene" Hemphill, 97, of Nebraska City, died on June 11, 2009, at the Ambassador in Nebraska City. He was born on June 8, 1912, in White City, Kan., to George and Minnie (Vettie) Hemphill. On Sept. 9, 1937, he married Bernice Hohnroth in Council Bluffs.
Gene farmed northwest of Nebraska City until he retired and sold the farm in 1992. He enjoyed fishing, dancing and driving around the surrounding area to check on the crops. He loved to play cards with his family and friends at the Eagles Club or local taverns. He was a long time member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles #968.
He entered the Ambassador in Nebraska City this past year.
He was preceded by brothers and sisters.
He is survived by his wife, Bernice of Nebraska City; son Thomas “Tom” Hemphill and wife Janet of Nebraska City; daughter Marcia Schroeder and husband Craig of Talmage; four grandchildren, David Hemphill and wife Beth of Omaha, Janna Peterson of Nebraska City, Tiffany (Heng) Moss and husband Mike of Lincoln and Cory Schroeder of Omaha; five great grandchildren, Bailey Hemphill, Caryle Hemphill, Jenna Leigh Peterson, Emma Moss and Max Moss; other relatives and friends.
Visitation is Monday, June 15, 1-8 p.m. with the family greeting friends from 6-8 p.m. at Peterson Mortuary.
Funeral service is Tuesday, June 16, at 11 a.m. at Peterson Mortuary Chapel in Nebraska City.
Casket bearers will be Gary Beccard, David Hemphill, Mike Moss, Cory Schroeder and Craig Schroeder. Burial will follow at Wyuka Cemetery in Nebraska City.
Memorials are suggested to the choice of the family.
