John D. Helm, 70, of Nebraska City died Aug. 1, 2010 at his home. He was born on April 29, 1940 at Nebraska City, the son of Daniel Phillip and Ileta Marie (Huff) Helm.  

He graduated from Nebraska City High School in 1958 and served in the Army from 1958-1961. He married Sally A. Betts on Aug. 17, 1969 at Nebraska City.

He was construction foreman for the former LT&T Phone Company, retiring in 1997 after 30 years of service. He was a member of the Eagles Aerie #968 in Nebraska City and the V.F.W.

He is survived by wife Sally Helm of Nebraska City; son John Andrew Helm and significant other Jennifer of Des Moines; daughter Jody Lyn Helm and significant other Mike of Lincoln; five grandchildren:  Garrett, Jonah, Will, M.J. and Kobe; brother William “Bill” Helm of Baton Rouge, La.; and other family and friends.

He was preceded by infant sister Ileta Marie and brothers Jim Helm and Dan Helm.

Funeral services will be held Saturday morning at 11 a.m.  at Gude Mortuary in Nebraska City.  Burial will follow at Wyuka Cemetery with complete military honors conducted by the Nebraska Army National Guard Funeral Honors Detail.

The family will greet friends on Friday from 6-8 p.m. at Gude Mortuary.
