Marie R. Wieckhorst, 90, of Nebraska City, died Aug. 2, 2010 at St. Mary’s Community Hospital in Nebraska City. She was born on June 24, 1920 in Dunbar, the daughter of Edward and Ollie May (Shepardson) Cox.
She graduated from Nebraska City High School in 1938. She married Herbert H. Wieckhorst on July 9, 1943 in San Diego.
Marie was a devoted wife and mother. After the children were raised, Marie started college at the age of 52. She was a member of the Bethel United Church of Christ and had many hobbies and interests which included being a poet, a painter/artist and a wood carver. She served as secretary for the Nebraska Thespians and as president for the Arts and Crafts Guild. She also participated in and promoted water aerobics.
She is survived by husband Herbert Wieckhorst of Nebraska City; children Sherry Ann Bitz and husband Kenneth of LaRue, Texas, and Harry A. Wieckhorst and wife Dianne of Nebraska City; grandchildren Anne R. Bennett and Andrew Wieckhorst; great-grandchildren Preston Wieckhorst and Trevor Bennett; brother Edwin Cox of Council Bluffs; and other family and friends.
She was preceded by sisters Maxine Guhde and Mayola Meredith.
Marie’s wishes were to have her body donated to the University of Nebraska Medical Center.
