Ivan C. Boerner, age 84 of Nebraska City passed away suddenly Friday evening; February 5, 2010 at St. Mary’s Community Hospital in Nebraska City.
Ivan Casper Boerner was born on July 27, 1925 at Nebraska City; the son of Casper John and Ella Marie (Lechner) Boerner. He attended school in Nebr. City and high school at St. Bernard’s Academy (Lourdes Central Catholic).
He joined the US Navy in 1943 during World War II and served in various locations aboard ship including the South Pacific. During his time in the Navy, he was a storekeeper for the USS Adams.
He was honorably discharged in 1946.
On June 12, 1947, he was united in marriage to Betty Lou Harding at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Nebraska City. The couple was later blessed with a daughter Susan Elizabeth.
Ivan was very active in the Nebraska City community both during his working years and after his retirement. He worked as Merchandise Manager at Jessup Drug in Nebraska City for over 25 years
and retired from there. Prior to his employment at Jessup‘s, he worked in the Retail Grocery Business
for Baker’s Grocery Stores in St. Joseph, MO, Harlan, IA and Omaha, NE. Following his retirement, he worked as a bookkeeper for Paul Knoll, he delivered prescriptions for Jessup‘s Drug and U-Save Pharmacy and he assisted at Gude Mortuary. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and sang in the church choir, American Legion Post #8 , V.F.W., WOTA, UCT, Eagles Aerie #968 where he was life member, Nebraska City Apple Corps, and the Southeast Nebraska Municipal Band. He served as an Ambassador for the Nebraska City Chamber of Commerce and also served as a Tour Guide for the many busses that came to Nebraska City. He loved and enjoyed people and conversing over a cup of coffee.
He is survived by his daughter Susan Beilke and husband Daryl of Grand Island; two grandchildren: Elizabeth and Darren Beilke; a sister Virginia Grimes of Omaha; nieces, nephews, other family and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife Betty on May 4, 2007 and a sister Mary Ann Kreifels.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday morning at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Nebraska City with Fr. Michael McCabe celebrating the Mass. Burial will be in the Wyuka Cemetery with complete military services conducted by the US Navy Funeral Honors Detail.
A rosary will be recited Tuesday evening at 7:00 p.m. at the Gude Mortuary in Nebraska City followed by the family greeting friends.
Memorials may be directed to St. Mary’s Catholic Church or the Southeast Nebraska Municipal Band.
