Ann M. (Toner) Gottwald, age 60, of rural Nebraska City passed away on Saturday, February 6, 2010 at St. Mary’s Community Hospital in Nebraska City.

Ann was born on Nov. 10, 1949, in Cherokee, Iowa, the daughter of Francis F. and Mary Ann (Delaney) Toner. She attended school and graduated from Humboldt High School in Humboldt, Iowa with the class of 1968. She then attended Fort Dodge Junior College and Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa, graduating with a degree in journalism.

She was united in marriage to Allen A. Gottwald on Dec. 5, 1987 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church southwest of Nebraska City. Ann worked nearly 40 years as a reporter for newspapers and magazines.

She was employed with various newspapers including the Lincoln Journal Star, Kansas City Star, Omaha World Herald and most recently the Nebraska Farmer. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and the North American Agricultural Journalists.

She is survived by her husband Allen A. Gottwald of rural Nebraska City and son Alex A. Gottwald; one brother Michael F. Toner and wife Sunshine Overkamp of Atlanta, Ga; two nieces: Sharon Taormina and husband Peter of Cincinnati, Ohio and Susan Brown of Watkinsville, Ga; three great-nephews; two great-nieces; father and mother in law Alton and Marcella Gottwald of rural Nebraska City; sisters-in-law: Mary Joe Sheldon of Lincoln and Cheryl Faust and husband Brian of Omaha; other family and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Feb. 11 at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church southwest of Nebraska City with Fr. Thomas Bush celebrating the Mass. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

A rosary will be recited Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. at the Gude Mortuary in Nebraska City.

Visitation will begin at the mortuary at 11 a.m. Wednesday, and will also be held an hour prior to the services at St. Joseph’s Church on Thursday.

Memorials may be given to St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.
