Former Hastings resident Barbara C. McCarthy, 87, passed away Monday, May 7, 2018, at Heritage of Bel-Air, Norfolk.  
A Rosary was to be said at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 10, at Butler Volland Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial was to be 10 a.m. Friday, May 11, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Hastings with Father Jeremy Hazuka officiating. Burial was to be in Parkview Cemetery in Hastings. Memorials may be given to St. Michael’s Catholic Church.
Visitation was to be 1-7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Barbara was born in Nebraska City to Eugene and Rosalia (Ramold) Kreifels. She graduated from St. Bernard’s Academy in 1948. She worked as a dental assistant in Nebraska City. She married Robert E. McCarthy on Sept. 16, 1950. He preceded her in death on Dec. 31, 2004.   
Barbara and Robert moved to Scottsbluff, where they raised their family.
In 1974, they relocated to Hastings. She worked at Watson Elementary School in the food service department. She was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church where she participated in the Altar Society and choir.
Barbara dedicated her life to her family. She enjoyed baking, crafting and was an avid walker. She had many dear and loyal friends.  
Barbara was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and brothers and their spouses, Orville & Pat Kreifels, Allen Kreifels, and Andrew & Margaret Kreifels.  
Survivors include children and spouses: Kent and Donna McCarthy of Phoenix, Ariz.; Jan and Michael Utecht of Hastings; and Bart McCarthy of  Norfolk; siblings and spouses: Floyd & Garnet Kreifels of Nebraska City; and Mary Jean and C.W. LeCure of Macungie, Pa.; sister-in-law: Delores Kreifels of Springfield; many nieces, nephews and families.
