Ivan Herman Auer, 91, died Oct. 25, 2017 in Scottsdale, Ariz.
He was born Dec. 21, 1925, in rural Syracuse, the son of William and Louise (Brinkhoff) Auer.
He graduated from Syracuse High School in May 1942.
He farmed near Syracuse and Burr, until October 1950 when he was drafted into the army.
He served during the
Korean War with the Fourth Infantry division in Germany and was discharged in October 1952.
Ivan attended the University of Nebraska from September 1953 until June 1957.
He received a Bachelor of Science and
a Masters of Arts in Agricultural Economics. He was a member of the Alpha Zeta Fraternity.
He married Lee Darlene Brown on Aug. 6, 1954, in
Talmage.
They had two children, Cheryl Lee and
Larry Douglas (Doug).
After graduation from college, Ivan engaged primarily in agribusiness. A major portion of his professional life was with
Continental Grain Company in New York City and Chicago.
He focused primarily on commodity research and trading. Ivan was a past member of The Chicago Board of Trade, The
Chicago Mercantile Exchange and the Union League Club of Chicago.
He also engaged in cattle feeding and farming.
He was a member of the Professional Farmers of America and the National Cattlemen’s Association. He served as a Director
of the First Security Bank of Fox Valley and the Gary
Wheaton Bank of Fox Valley, Aurora, Ill. He was also a member of the American Legion.
Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Lee Darlene, a daughter Cheryl Lee and her husband James Edward Dempsey, Sr., of Armonk, New York, a son Larry Douglas
and his wife Julie Elizabeth of Scottsdale, Ariz., and four grandchildren; Caitlin Lee Dempsey and James Edward Dempsey, Jr., Shayla Elizabeth Auer and Timothy Douglas Auer. Other survivors include a sister Betty Zahn of Syracuse.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Arlin and
Duane and sisters Eunice and Alice.
He was baptized as an infant into the Lutheran faith and was a  lifelong active member of the Lutheran Church.
At the time of his death he was a member of La Casa de Cristo Lutheran Church in Scottsdale, Ariz.
