Nebraska City dedicated its living legacy tree program at the community tree planting to kick off Arbor Day activities Friday.
Pines Acres Nursery previously planted 37 crab apple and maple trees in the Central Avenue walk space from Sixth to 12th street.
Eighteen groups received memorial plaques and add soil to tree stations.
“We are honored so many of you have chose to honor your businesses and loved ones in this special way,” said Rebecca Turner of Nebraska City Tourism and Commerce.
Opening ceremonies at Memorial Way also included an introduction of Arbor Day honorees Joel and Helen Lundak, readings from the Arbor Day poetry contest and statement of the city's new marketing tagline, “Arbor Day's hometown – where great ideas grow.”
Kimmel Foundation sponsored 20 trees, including one dedicated to Bill and Marge Carroll.
Also receiving plaques are Darlene Nesiba, Bill, Mary Jo, Ken and Alda Dawson, Leadership Nebraska City, Arbor Bank, John David Beck, Pierce and Betty Koslosky, Hap and Grace Stansbury, Joel and Helen Lundak, Ralph and Bernice Wurtele, The Arbor Day Foundation, Miller Monroe Farrell Insurance, Bill and Joan Dawson, Dr. Arden and Patricia Bonebrake, Pearl and John Neuhalfen, Commercial State Bank and St. Mary's Community Hospital.
The $750 tree sponsorship includes the tree, cement work to install it and two-year maintenance.
The city is paying for the decorative grating and plaque.
Turner said a National Trust for Historic Preservation study found that trees encourage consumers to spend more time in a commercial district and increase the general perception about the value of products there.
“Trees may just be Nebraska City's competitive edge,” she said.
