Fair livestock auction brings 'shocking' generosity

Shallenberger Trucking and Harvest Inn of Hamburg purchased Heng's 138-pound lamb. She said the sheep numbers were down, from 25 to 17, so the support from the auction bidders helps encourage fair participation.

Heng said she will invest the money in sheep for next year and the construction of calf roping chute.

The auction’s 17 sheep brought $7,519 compared to a market value of $2,046. Last year, 25 sheep brought $4,462.

The 79 hogs at the fair Thursday would have brought $12,037 at market, but brought $38,179 at the fair. There were 27 fewer hogs at auction compared to last year, but the market price has increased from 32 to 60 cents.

Over $500 was bid on the grandchampion 4-H carcass hog shown by Tony Heng and hogs shown by Brooke Snyder, Ty Snyder, Millie Everett, Elizabeth Burr, Dustin Knabe, Ethan Wallman, Megan Wallman, Logan Mueller, Trey Mueller, Lily Kastens, Anna Kastens, Nathan Hemje, Dalton Dozier, Kayla Dozier, Tyler Berner, Keianna Bahr and Kevin Bahr.

Over $600 was bid for hogs shown by Brooke Snyder, Ty Snyder and Brooke Bennett.

Over $700 was bid on hogs shown by Hannah Crownover, Anna Kastens, Nate Snyder, and Kirsten Schutz.

Hauschild Feeds and Vantage Chemical paid $1,152 for Schutz’s 320-pound hog.

The auction’s 35 head of beef, which weighed in at 49,174 pounds, had a market price of $46,715, but brought $68,678. Last year, 34 head of cattle brought $51,343.

This year’s grand champion 4-H heifer brought $1,269 from Syracuse Lumber.

Eight meat goats had a market value of $490, but brought $1,736.
