Approximately 70 employees at the American Meter plant in Nebraska City were laid off Friday morning, effective immediately, when third shift production was discontinued.
A press release issued by Elster American Meter confirmed the layoffs. The company did not comment on whether any of those workers were offered positions on other shifts.
“This action is in response to current macroeconomic conditions and market demand. The facility added a third production shift in 2011 to meet the increase in its residential metering business associated with replacement and upgrade projects by some of Elster’s large utility customers. Market demand has now tapered,” the release states.
“We maintain flexibility in our operations and scale as market demand fluctuates,” said Roy Sutterfield, president, Elster Gas North America.
Elster American Meter manufactures and supplies gas measurement and control products for the natural gas and propane industries. The Nebraska City facility produces residential, commercial and industrial and transmission pipeline gas meters and pressure regulators.
