City workers, area residents and restaurant personnel appeared before city commissioners Monday night to discuss possible parking restrictions on 14th Corso from 11th to 13th Streets, including the stretch between Pizza Hut and McDonald’s.
City Administrator Pat Haverty recommended that parking be restricted at least on one side of the street because emergency vehicles and snow removal are hampered by a crowded street.
Fire Chief Alan Viox agreed and said parking on both sides doesn’t provide the large fire trucks with ample space to pass through.
Bob Koch, McDonald’s owner, asked that parking still be allowed on one side of the street. Koch said he lost around 20 parking stalls when the restaurant was widened and the sign was relocated to comply with city regulations.
Koch said he hoped any new restrictions would be “business friendly” and said adequate parking means more customers and more sales tax for the city.
Stephanie Fisher, manager of Pizza Hut, said restaurant delivery trucks have difficulty getting in and out of the parking lot when cars are parked on the street.
Jesse Brown, who has lived near the restaurants for 40 years, said parked cars can be struck by vehicles traveling downhill when the streets are slick.
Mayor Jack Hobbie asked whether off-street parking could be added west of the restaurant south of 14th Corso.
Public Properties Director Dan Giittinger said he would have to look into the topography of the area.
Commissioners may vote to restrict parking on 14th Corso at a future meeting.
