Otoe County commissioners voiced concern Tuesday regarding stolen road signs.

Commissioners Tim Nelsen and Carol Crook said signs have recently been taken from roadways south of Nebraska City and Syracuse.

Crook said it’s an expense to the taxpayer to replace the signs, but it’s also a safety issue.

“When those signs are not there it creates a scenario that could result in an accident,” she said.

“We’ve had people shooting signs and now they are removing them. We’ve seen destruction of signs by painting over them. People need to be aware that this is happening and, if they see something, report it to the sheriff’s office,” she said.

Nelsen said the sheriff’s office is investigating the road sign thefts.
Crook said the theft of railroad crossing and railroad warning signs is a particular safety concern.
