Nebraska City Fire Department’s 2009 statistics show an average response time to city and rural fire calls at six minutes.

Out of 122 calls in the year, the response time was four minutes or less for 67. Response times were two minutes for 18 calls and 10 minutes for some rural calls. Nebraska City’s rural district covers 120 square miles.

Dave Holland, training officer, also said seven volunteer firefighters recently completed the state Fire Marshal’s 120-hour firefighter 1 class.

Holland commended Jason Booth, David Briley, Philip Hancock, Brian Ehmke, Chris Griepenstroh, Jeff Lollmann and Corey Swanson.

“It’s good that theses younger guys are taking the time and effort to learn this stuff for the citizens of Nebraska City. It is hard to find people who are willing to give up this much time,” he said.

The class, which met twice a week for two months, covers topics including fire suppression techniques, building construction, hazardous materials and hose loading.
