One suspect caught after chase into Fremont County, Iowa

One of the two suspects to lead law enforcement on a high speed chase, followed by a search after they wrecked and abandoned the vehicle they had allegeldly stolen was apprehended yesterday. A report came in to the Fremont County Sheriff's office that a subject was running south on the West Nishnabotna levee. Deputies responded and apprehended Sean Christopher Schmidt, 37, of St. Joseph, Mo.

Update: Fremont county search called off

Fremont County Sheriff's office confirms that the search for suspects who crashed a reportedly stolen vehicle that was pursued from Missouri into Fremont County has been called off. It was reported that two suspects were being searched for but were not found. Lock downs at area schools have been canceled.

The second of two suspects wanted in connection with a late night pursuit in which shots were fired at a Nebraska State Patrol trooper has been taken into custody.

NSP finds 103 pounds of marijuana in speeding SUV

An Oregon driver is jailed after troopers seized 103.5 pounds of marijuana from his sports utility vehicle.

Just after 8 a.m. on Friday, a trooper stopped an eastbound 2011 Mitsubishi Endeavor for speeding on Interstate-80 near the Pleasant Dale exit in Seward County.

An NSP canine indicated the odor of drugs coming from the rear of the SUV. A search of the vehicle led to the seizure of 103.5 lbs. of marijuana.

Man who shot mowing wife receives probation, guns returned

A Nebraska City man who pelleted his wife with a shotgun blast as she mowed the lawn last summer received a five-year probation sentence Thursday.

District Judge Daniel Bryan sentenced James T. Booth, 47, to probation and ordered his guns returned to the family.

Police were alerted to the incident on June 3 on a report of a man shooting a gun at 1314 13th Corso.

Officers found Booth outside holding a shotgun and tasered him after he refused to put the weapon down.

Man tries to elude police in car, on 4-wheeler and on foot


Police arrested a Nebraska City man after he attempted to elude them in a car, on a 4-wheeler and eventually on foot.

Officers were responding to separate auto accident and disturbance calls on Fourth Avenue when a car would not pull over to the side as police approached.

“The car blew a stop sign and the chase was on,” said Sgt. Dana Schebaum.

Police followed the car over a mile observing  it stop near a residence. Officers say 18-year-old Matthew Jorgenson emerged on a 4-wheeler near 201 10th Corso.

Grant equips sheriff's deputies with defibrillators

Otoe County Sheriff's patrol cars are being equipped with life saving cardiac equipment, said Otoe County Emergency Management Director Gregg Goebel.

The county has recently received a grant for 20 new automatic electronic defibrillators that will equip the patrol vehicles, as well as the courthouse, jail and EMA vehicle.
He said the equipment will result in more life-saving opportunities.

“We know that law enforcement, 95 percent of the time, is the first on a scene. When we have the capability and deputies who are capable, we can intervene and do what it takes to save a life,” he said.

Deputies trace 911 emergency call to Syracuse

The Otoe County sheriff’s office traced a 911 call to Syracuse, where deputies arrested a 17-year-old Syracuse juvenile Jan. 24 for suspicion of using obscenities and pushing his mother.

The dispatch center in Nebraska City received a 911 call, but the caller did not speak.

The 911 center’s mapping equipment gave deputies several addresses in the vicinity of Third Street or Locust Street in Syracuse.

Chinese national clocked at 111 mph on Interstate

A pursuit on Interstate 80 leads to the arrest of a Chinese national on charges of driving 111 mph  and flight to avoid arrest.

At approximately 4 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 19, a Nebraska State Patrol trooper was westbound on Interstate 80 near Wood River, when a speeding 2011 Nissan Ultima passed his patrol unit.

The trooper attempted to stop the car. The driver failed to pull over and continued traveling westbound on I-80 at speeds of 60-65 mph.

Feds say Rojas operated as identity broker in Nebraska City

The U.S. Attorney General's office has released the identity of a Nebraska City man who was taken into custody Jan. 11 for suspicion of acting as an identity broker in a scheme to traffic identifies of Puerto Rico citizens.

Gerardo Rangel Rojas, also known as Ivan Lara Rojas, is scheduled for a hearing today in U.S. District Court before Judge Cheryl R Zwart.

The hearing is called to determine if Rojas is the appropriate person to be ordered back to Puerto Rico where these charges originated, said Jan Sharp of the attorney's office. He said the court ordered Rojas detained at an earlier court hearing.

No one injured when cars collided on Highway 75

There were no apparent injuries Monday morning when north and southbound vehicles collided on Highway 75.

A 2010 Saturn driven by Jasmyne A. Strauss, 19, of Shubert, Neb., was traveling south on the highway near County Road P and a 2002 Chevrolet Monte Carlo driven by Cecilia M. Francis, 27, of Stella, Neb., was northbound about seven miles south of Nebraska City.

Family away when house burst into flames

Fire ravaged the home of Patrick and Amanda Straw Saturday afternoon.

Amanda Straw had taken her two children, ages two and four, to McDonald's for breakfast and was heading to the Family Dollar store when she received a phone call that the house was on fire.

Police officers and firefighters arriving first saw flames climbing the wall near the front door entrance.

The Nebraska City pumper connected with 200 feet of hose and charged three lines to the house. Firefighters were able to concentrate on the fire after quickly learning that all of the house's occupants were accounted for except the family dog.

Loose shoe blamed as Blazer runs amok down Auburn street

An Auburn woman blamed a loose shoe for an accident Jan. 11 where she backed her car into two other vehicles, jumped a curb and rolled before hitting a house.

Neva C. Thies, 78, told police she was backing her 1997 Chevrolet Blazer when a loose shoe fell from her foot.

She said while attempting to get the shoe back on she stepped on the wrong pedal.

Pursuit Suspect Stabs Self in Medical Center Parking Lot

 A traffic stop for speeding in Blair, Neb.,led to a pursuit that ended in the parking lot of the Fremont Medical Center. An Oakland, Iowa, man allegedly led police of a pursuit then cut himself on the neck.

Two separate traffic stops on Interstate 80 Wednesday, led troopers to seize a little more than 49 lbs. of marijuana and nearly four lbs. of hashish.

Nebraska State Supreme Court sets execution date for Michael Ryan

Attorney General Jon Bruning released the following statement on today’s Nebraska Supreme Court decision to set an execution date of March 6, 2012 for death row inmate Michael Ryan.
 
“In light of today’s Nebraska Supreme Court ruling setting the execution date for Mr. Ryan, the State will make all necessary preparations to carry out the sentence,” said Attorney General Bruning.

Feds call Nebraska City man an identity broker in Puerto Rico scheme

Federal authorities took a Nebraska City man into custody Wednesday morning for alleged involvement as an “identity broker” in an international scheme to traffic identities of Puerto Rican citizens.

Nebraska City police and Otoe County sheriff's deputies assisted U.S. postal inspectors and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, which oversees Homeland Security Investigations, to serve search and arrests warrants.

Officers entered a residence at 1208 Fourth Ave. around 6 a.m., but learned the suspect was no longer staying there.

An investigation led to a search of a home at the Nebraska City Mobile Home Community, where the man was taken into custody.
