Grant provides saturation patrols to stop impaired drivers

Nebraska City police are participating in the national You Drink you Drive you Lose enforcement grant Aug. 20 to Sept. 6.

The Nebraska Office of Highway Safety grant provides overtime pay to allow a “saturation patrol of Nebraska City.” This weekend, the grant provided for four extra police officers to work about 25 hours.

Joe Cool enters guilty plea to sexual assault

Joe J. Cool entered guilty pleas Tuesday to first degree sexual assault of a Lincoln boy and possession of child pornography at his Palmyra residence.

Otoe County Attorney David Partsch and Public Defender Michael Ziskey told District Judge Randall Rehmeier they would jointly recommend a sentence of 20 years in prison for Cool, 39, formerly known as Brent Wheatley.

Police warn of animal bites

Nebraska City police report several complaints this summer of people being bit by stray dogs and cats.

Police advise people not to pick up or try to catch animals they do not know.
If one of these animals bites someone the animal, if caught, usually has to be quarantined to determine if it has rabies or some other disease.

Household chores interrupted by fire

A fire interrupted Scott and Tiffany Smith’s house cleaning Thursday evening.

Scott had brought a load of laundry to the basement and went upstairs to clean the oven.  He decided he need something to help scrape the oven and headed back down stairs.

“I was hit by a blast of black smoke,” he said.

Buick towing truck crashes on Highway 75

Otoe County officials and the Nebraska State Patrol responded to a three-vehicle accident Wednesday afternoon near the intersection of Highway 75 and N Road (Highway 128).

The state patrol reports the the Ford pickup was in tow behind the Buick Century.

Police chief says construction presents parking issues

Nebraska City Police Chief David Lacy said street construction in downtown Nebraska City is putting parking spaces at a premium and making it more important for residents to follow parking regulations.

He said police will be patrolling areas of parking complaints during the construction.

Woman returns to street dance after heart stops twice

A Nehawka woman returned to the Union Street Dance Saturday night after emergency responders performed CPR to revive her twice.

Linda Field, 51, of Nehawka said she had spent about an hour at the street dance with friends and was walking near the village park when she  collapsed.

Julian woman hospitalized after rollover

An 18-year-old Julian girl was hospitalized Wednesday after a rollover accident on County Road S west of Julian.

Nebraska City EMS transported Brittni D. Mann to St. Mary’s Community Hospital after she was thrown from the 1998  Oldsmobile Intrigue she was driving around 6:34 p.m.

Heat exhaustion blamed for stranded motorist's death

The Fremont County Sheriff’s Office identified a man discovered along a roadway Monday afternoon as William L. Morgan, 71, of Tabor.

A citizen reported a body lying in the gravel roadway west of the McPaul interchange of Interstate 29 and deputies responded to the 1900 block of 155th Street.

Transmission fluid blamed for truck fire

Nebraska City firefighters extinguished a pickup truck fire Friday afternoon that may have started when transmission on a hot engine ignited.

Fire Chief Alan Viox said the 1994 Ford F150 pickup truck was a total loss after fire spread from the engine to the cab before firefighters arrived at the rural home of Ross Baker on north 58th Road.

Otoe County commissioners voiced concern Tuesday regarding stolen road signs.

Commissioners Tim Nelsen and Carol Crook said signs have recently been taken from roadways south of Nebraska City and Syracuse.

Firefighters relieved to find burning Unadilla home empty

Unadilla Fire Chief Steve Vodicka was on the fire hose with his son and wife suppressing a fire in a Unadilla trailer Saturday when a neighbor gave arriving firefighters alarming news.

The house owner, Ron Stock, was seen leaving earlier that morning, but the neighbor said his wife might still be inside.

Couple killed in burning motor home on interstate

An elderly couple was killed June 30 when their mobile home burst into flames on Interstate 80 near Beaver Crossing.

The Nebraska State Patrol says the motor home was fully engulfed in flames as it traveled in a roadside ditch.

Two new fire trucks are expected for the Palmyra and Douglas rural fire district.

A used pumper is being ordered for Douglas and a new tanker for Palmyra at an estimated cost of $325,000.
