With local schools soon to be back in session, the Nebraska City Police Department would like to make a timely reminder regarding school bus safety and school children pedestrian safety.

Motorist are reminded that is illegal to pass a school bus on which the stop warning signal light are flashing or stop arm is extended, from either direction, approaching the bus from the front or from the back. Motorists shall remain stopped until the flashing lights are turned off and stop arm is retracted.

School bus drivers are urged to report violations with the police department, who will follow up reports, up to and including the issuance of citations. The offence is misdemeanor requiring a court appearance.

With school in session, all motorists are reminded to use caution around schools zones and school age pedestrians, particularly in the early morning hours and at dismissal time.

Be reminded that as motorist, it is our responsibility to watch out for our children, and don’t assume they know when it is safe to cross the street. State law requires motorist to yield to a pedestrian.

The Nebraska City Police Department will monitor various street crossing once school begins.

“A moment of carelessness could result in a lifetime of remorse,” said Police Chief David Lacy.
