The Nebraska City Board of Education dedicated the new Northside Elementary School on Thursday, May 27.
John Crook, board president, said the new school is an effort of the entire community.
“Without the community’s affirmative vote, we would not have this building,” he said.
Crook thanked Stacie Higgins and Carla Zaroban for their efforts to get people out to vote .
He also credited students and staff. “Despite this wonderful facility, it’s just a building without the teacher,” he said.
Superintendent Jeff Edwards introduced guests, including former superintendent Keith Rohwer, Peru State College President Dan Hansen and Eagle Scout Andrew Parker.
Current school board members are Crook, Bernadette Shanholtz, Cyndi Fox, Tom Farrell, John James, Bret Allgood, Paul Davis, Richard Heft and Stacie Higgins. Former school board members are Susan Wurtele, Mark Kemper, Ken Zaroban and RaChelle Hoops.
The 60-member Northside Choir sang three selections and joined Rose Ralstin of Nebraska City Tourism and Commerce and Annette Zeplin of Facility Cost Management Group with a ribbon cutting.
Principal Haeven Pedersen cut the ribbon.
The school was open for tours following the ceremony. Hayward Elementary School was also open for a tour of new construction there.
