Nebraska City Middle School students have collected over $2,300 for the relief efforts in Haiti. The sixth grade class raised the most money, a total of $1,035.20, the seventh grade raised $836.52 and eighth graders contributed $448.24. The money was raised in just four days.
Counselor and Student Council Sponsor Sharon Larson made wooden collection boxes for each grade, and more containers were needed to hold all the coins and bills. One group of students brought in $60 in pennies.
Seventh grade Student Council member Nathan Martin approached Larson about doing the fundraiser, and Principal Jenny Powell said the entire student body was enthusiastic. “The kids were really hyped about this one,” she said.
Hayward Elementary and Nebraska City High School also raised money for the earthquake victims, with totals to be announced.
