The Nebraska City School Board added three days of classroom instruction to the remaining school calendar Monday to make up for snow days.

The move means students will report for classes on Friday, Jan. 15, rather than having a teacher in-service. Teacher-only days on Feb. 15 and May 28 were also changed to student days.

Students have already missed six days this year due to the weather and Superintendent Jeff Edwards said more snow could put the school in a dilemma. He said extending the school year is not an easy option.

The high school construction schedule figures that students will be out of the building by June 1. Edwards said extending the school year in the spring, might jeopardize completion of rooms needed to start school in the fall.

He said any more snow days this winter could mean a shortened Easter break and the loss of additional teacher work days.

He told board members that if the district does not make up any of its six snow days, the number of classroom days will end at 169.5.

Edwards said it is probably okay to miss six days, but teachers say they need more time in the classroom.

“We don’t like shooting for the minimum,” he said of classroom hours.
