The Nebraska City School board voted Monday to replace the scoreboard at Pioneer Field and explore the possibility of a $400,000 athletic track project.

John James and Paul Davis of the board’s building and grounds committee said the school needs to remedy cracks and warps in the existing track. A partial fix, that would include a new concrete base and running surface for over a dozen areas, would cost about half that of a new track.

James said the committee feels the unbudgeted track repairs should begin as soon possible.
“It was felt, it probably needs fixing big time. It is to the point of having issues with accidents,” he said.

Davis said the school will pursue a grant that might pay up to 25 percent of the cost of a recycled rubber surface of a new track.
The track was located west of the high school in the late 1970s and was open to competition by 1981.

The school will purchase a $13,502 outdoor scoreboard along with two scoreboards for the gymnasium under construction.
