Ahead of the Sept. 13 City of Nebraska City Twitter Town Hall the Morton-James Public Library hosted a “ Twitter for Beginners” class Thursday night.
Business consultant Diane Siefkes from Lincoln walked the 18 attendees through the basics of setting up a Twitter account.
Siefkes started the class with a few statistics about the app. She noted that Twitter has 330 million active users monthly, and that more than 500 million tweets are posted daily.
Originally, tweets were limited to 140 characters, said Siefkes, but Twitter has recently expanded the size of the posts to 280 characters.
She added that including a photo or video with a tweet increases the chance of that post being retweeted or shared.
The purpose of the class was to help raise civic engagement on social media, according to Morton-James Public Library Director Donna Kruse, who organized the class.
The City of Nebraska City’s Twitter Town Hall will begin at 7 p.m. Sept. 13. Follow the city’s Twitter account at @Nebraska_ City.
