The Can Care-a-Van visit to Nebraska City on Tuesday, June 6, resulted in more than 8,600 pounds of food being donated to the Nebraska City Food Pantry.
Keitha Thomson of the Nebraska City Food Pantry said that 8,644 pounds of food were donated during the day-long event.
Food pantry representatives had set a goal before the event to collect 3,000 pounds of food.
Thomson credited the nice weather and the generosity of Nebraska City residents as factors in the day’s success.
“We are super pleased and excited with the response of the community,” said Thomson, who also thanked Fareway for setting up a secondary collection site during the event.
Thomson added that almost 1,000 pounds of food was donated by Fareway shoppers.
The Can Care-a-Van “reminds people that we’re here,” said Thomson, “and it keeps the shelves full for the summer.”
