Governor Pete Ricketts has declared next week Public Transit Week in Nebraska, and the Nebraska City office of Blue Rivers Public Transportation has a week-long celebration planned.
Ongoing events next week will include the collection of canned goods and nonperishable food items for the food pantry, said Bobbi Lechner, Blue Rivers Public Transportation dispatcher. This will take place Monday through Thursday, she added.
The week will also feature a coloring contest for preschoolers. The public is invited to judge the entries, which will be on display in the window of the office, 109 S. 9th St.
New riders will receive a free one-way ride during the week, said Lechner, and current riders will receive one half-price trip during the week.
Lechner has distributed forms to local businesses to participate in a game pertaining to public transportation in town.
Each day of the week also has something special planned, according to Lechner.
Monday, April 10, will be Passenger Appreciation Day. Riders will receive a small thank-you gift on that day.
Tuesday, April 11, the transportation office will host an open house from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The public is invited to stop by and have a bite to eat, said Lechner.
Wednesday, April 12, will be Veterans Appreciation Day, said Lechner. Veterans ride free with proof of service, such as a military ID card or a driver’s license with a “veteran” designation on it.
Thursday, April 13, will be “Stuff the Bus Day,” said Lechner. Donations of non-perishable food items will be collected during the first part of the week and will be delivered to the Food Pantry on Thursday.
Friday, April 14, will be Employee Appreciation Day, said Lechner, who encouraged riders to thank their drivers for getting them around town safely.
Friday will also see the announcement of the coloring contest winners, along with prize drawings for riders and anyone who stops in the transportation office to inquire about bus service. Finally, the winners of the business game will also be announced.
Blue Rivers Public Transportation operates from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday in Nebraska City. Rides are $2 one-way, and reservations need to be made 24 hours in advance.
