For more than a decade, the Alpha Omega chapter of Beta Sigma Phi in Nebraska City has organized the annual AppleJack Fun Run and Walk, spending weeks designing the five-mile course, lining up volunteers, and keeping track of registrants.
The September project is the group’s major fundraising effort of the year.
“Thanks to the awesome work of our Beta Sigma Phi members, we have consistently had a successful event,” said chapter president Jaclyn Kreifels.
“We usually look for a local cause or event that we can donate funds to,” she added.
This year, the group decided to give a long-lasting gift to Nebraska City.
When the holiday lights were turned on around town, a new lighted “Happy Holidays” sign now welcomes incoming traffic west on 4th Corso.
“The lighted signs at the entrances to Nebraska City are a neat tradition, but they are getting pretty worn,” said Kreifels.
“We know that the Youth Advisory Committee with the Nebraska City Community Foundation Fund purchased two new ones not too long ago and this year we were able to raise enough money to get another new one,’ she said.
The sign, along with the rest of Nebraska City’s holiday decorations, was installed in mid-November.
The decorations were  lit for the first time on Saturday, Nov. 26, along with the tree on the Otoe County Courthouse lawn.
