Organizers of Nebraska City's 2011 AppleJack Festival are calling the event a sucess despite overcast skies on Saturday and persistent sprinkles and mist on Sunday.

Moving the Thomas D. Thomas carnival from First Corso near the Middle School to Central Avenue east of Sixth Street received positive feedback.

Rebecca Turner of NCTC said it provided a continuation of activity following the parade on Saturday and local businesses reported that crowds lingered longer.

Video: Missouri River flooding disfigures Highway 2 at Interstate 29

The Iowa Department of Transportation led a media tour at the intersection of Interstate 29 and Highway 2 where floodings from the Missouri River is receding after 70 days.

A breech of the federal flood levee June 30 sent 70,000 cubic feet per second into the lowland near Percival, Iowa. It soon spread over Highway 2 and surrounded sandbagged buildings at the Sapp Brothers Truck Stop.

The flood created two new channels, one flowing west of this site and another crossing under the interstate at the intersection.

Flooding continues as of Sept. 15. The river at Nebraska City would typically flow at 42,000 cfs in September, but is flowing at 108,000 cfs.

Carl and Sue Bergman inspire audiences with 'Joyful Noise'

Carl Bergman inspires his audience to clap with fragile hands or softly tap a toe. Sometimes they even break a smile.

It is nothing like the roar of the crowd the aspiring jazz musician visioned while voluntarily setting hour after hour of his teen years aside to practice his clarinet.

It's a far cry from his hopes training under a former principal musician of the New York Philharmonic and somewhat alien to the young man's ambition to be the best.

His wife Sue takes the hand of someone in the audience and embraces another.
She knows many of them by name and greets them all with her contagious smile.

Some who don't speak because of Alzheimer's suddenly sing, others listen motionless until they see Sue approach.

“I remember that song,” they say, and there's a connection between musician and audience that transcends a lifetime.

At the age of 76, Bergman knows he is finally at the height of his musical career.

Methodists commission choir song to celebrate "Arise and Build" construction

The First United Methodist Church choir premiered a choir anthem Sunday that had been composed specially for the church's consecration service for its new construction May 22.

Stephanie Huffman Stanek contacted R. Kevin Boesiger, a composer living in Beatrice, about a song that would incorporate the church's “Arise and Build” theme and the campaign slogan of “together we share and grow.”

“We felt that having a choral piece composed specifically for the chancel choir was a fantastic way to commemorate the occasion. “Kevin did an amazing job of incorporating the themes. He also managed to include two hymn quotes within the song that are appropriate to the theme,” Stanek said.

The construction includes a new Otoe County food pantry facility, elevator and upstairs classrooms.
