Great weather and an expanded lineup of events drew many to downtown Syracuse for the Germanfest celebration this weekend.

Fifth Street and Midland was the hub of activity, with a beer garden, live entertainment, a street dance, a watermelon feed and a variety of contests ranging from polka dancing, hot dog eating, hog calling, mother calling, bed races and cake eating to a new event, the Viener Dog races.

Downtown crowds included many people with dachshunds on leashes and the race track was surrounded by spectators well in advance of the race start.
