Over two inches of rain fell on Nebraska City over the Fourth of July weekend, but only a few drops landed before the Jaycees’ annual fireworks show.
“It was fortuitous that we had it on Saturday night,” said Jaycee volunteer Daryll Steinman.
Scattered rain clouds passed over Steinhart Park, but only a few sprinkles fell.
The Southeast Community Band and ice cream social started under clear skies, but rain clouds came in after 8 p.m.
Steinman said the Jaycees considered starting the show early to beat the rain, but there were still hundreds of people arriving in the area.
The rainfall held off until early in the morning on July Fourth and persisted through the day. There was a break in the rain on Sunday night allowing residents a chance to set off fireworks of their own.
Ryan Geschke, David Heye and Steve Strunk were among the Jaycee volunteers working Saturday to build sets and string electronic fuses.
