The United Way is ensuring that the tradition of presenting elementary students with a tree to plant at the Arbor Day children’s program will continue this year.
For decades, the Nebraska State Game & Parks Commission has made a free tree a part of the city’s annual Arbor Day celebration, but Nebraska City Power Partners volunteered last year to pay the $600 cost of the saplings.
The 2009 Arbor Day Committee recently learned that the state park is under a tight budget this year and can not provide the trees.
Jaclyn Kreifels, a member of the committee and the United Way board, asked the board to provide about 800 trees for 75 cents each.
“Since the trees go to the younger generation, this is one project we can do to continue the spirit of Arbor Day,” Kreifels said.
