The champion of Nebraska City’s Good Wood Barbecue Challenge this weekend will receive a Nebraska City-made trophy.

Nebraska City Tourism and Commerce had considered ordering a commercially-produced trophy, but decided a unique prize would best suit the city’s first official barbecue cooking competition.

The trophy is made from a split log that was cut from a Nebraska City tree. Jim Thurman is making a plaque bearing the Good Wood design and name for placement on the lacquered trophy.

The barbecue champion will be decided by a combination of the official judging and people choice votes.

In addition to the trophy, the winner will have rights to be the official vendor at the Nebraska City Community Foundation’s annual street dance on Aug. 21.
