Three dog owners told the Nebraska City Parks Advisory Committee last week they would like to pursue establishing a dog park at Wildwood Park.
Debra Kuhn, organizer of the Rotary Club’s Paws for a Cause fundraiser, and co-workers Stephanie Farmer and Charlotte O’Brien of the Ambassador presented the idea.
Farmer said a two-acre area south of Wildwood Pond and east of the Wildwood Period House could be fenced for the dog park.
She said the area provides plenty of shade, access to city water and exposure to tourists driving on Steinhart Park Road.
Residents, who are already walking their dogs, would have a place to let them run unleashed. There would likely be separate areas designated for big and little dogs. No dangerous dogs would be allowed.
Farmer said the advisory committee was concerned about the appearance of the dog park and the clean-up, but said their response was otherwise positive.
She said dog parks are an asset to their communities. “Nebraska City Tourism and Commerce has run into people who want a place to bring their dog while they are in town,”she said.
Pet owners also consider a dog park favorably when deciding to move to a community, she said.
The women hope to have the dog park proposal included on the city council agenda in August.
The parks advisory committee also considered replacing the tornado slide at Nuckolls Square Park.
