Mayor Jack Hobbie’s downtown style and maintenance committee agreed Thursday to review its proposed guidelines for downtown development before they go before the city council.

The Nebraska City Planning Commission cast a unanimous vote in August to send proposed zoning regulations to the city council without the commission’s recommendation.

City Administrator Pat Haverty said Friday the downtown committee plans to invite planning commission members to be a part of the process as they revisit the issue of downtown zoning.

The planning commission voiced concern about zoning regulations that would not allow owners of existing buildings to change the amount of window space, but would allow new construction to limit windows to 30 percent of the building face.

The proposed ordinance would not allow building owners to board up windows with plywood or paint over the brick exteriors.

Haverty said the city still wants guidelines for the development of the downtown, but plans to revisit details intended to preserve the downtown’s appearance.
