Nebraska City went into Monday's game hoping to put itself in the driver's seat for a Class B American Legion Seniors State Championship. Gretna had other plans.
The Dragons scored in every inning and limited the Nebraska City team to just two hits en route to a 10-0 win.
With the loss, Nebraska City was sent down to the loser's bracket where they will take on Gering in a 4 p.m. Tuesday game.
According to the bracket, Nebraska City would face Holdrege. Since Gretna has already played Gering, and tourney rules prohibit rematches in games 13 and 14 unless absolutely nesessary, Holdrege will take on Gretna and Nebraska City will take on Gering.
Gering topped Roncalli and Holdrege beat Valparaiso in elimination action on Monday.
A Nebraska City win on Tuesday would put them two victories from a state title.
If Gretna beats Holdrege on Tuesday, Nebraska City would need to beat Gretna twice Wednesday to win state. Should Gretna fall to Holdrege, the Dragons would advance to the late game Wednesday and await the winner of the early game, Nebraska City and Holdrege.
